Temperature Distributions in Thin Circular Disks with Variable Thickness, Thermal Conductivity, and Heat Transfer Coefficient (A Direct Variational Approach using Rayleigh Ritz Approximation)

An approximate solution for the temperature distributionin a thin circular disk having variable thermal properties,variable thickness, and a variable surface heat transfer coefficientis presented. The method used was to cast thegoverning differential equation into the equivalent variationalproblem and solve using the direct method of RayleighRitz . Agreement between the approximate solution and an exactsolution for the case of a constant thickness disk with constantproperties was excellent. A simple computer programwhich may be used to evaluate the temperature profiles isprovided.
