Alternative uses for waste newspaper : an investigation into the economic viability of options for reprocessing newspaper in Tasmania in 1991

The importance of, and impediments to, effective management ofudnewspaper waste in Australia are addressed. It is appreciated that it isudvital to establish facilities to recycle and reprocess newspaper as anudavenue for appreciating the value of newspaper. The existence ofudcollection industries depends on the creation of markets for theudreprocessed material. Options for reprocessing waste newspaper areudidentified, and include the manufacture of pulp moulded products,udbuilding materials, animal bedding, animal fodder and file folders.udNewspaper can also be used as a dewatering agent and as an industrialudand domestic fuel source. The viability of establishing reprocessingudfacilities in Tasmania is considered on environmental, technical andudeconomic grounds. On purely economic terms, it was found that theuduse of newspaper as a source of industrial fuel and in the production ofudnon-adhesive bonded panel board are the most attractive means ofudgenerating a demand for waste newspaper. Avenues forudgovernmental, community and industrial intervention to encourageudfurther use of waste newspaper are examined.
