The purpose of this investigation was to study theudspontaneous drawings of Tasmanian Primary School childrenudfrom five to ten years of age with a view to discoveringudthe typical usage of form, colour and content at each ageudlevel.udAn analysis of spontaneous drawings made in the classroomudsituation by the subjects of the study who were 1090udchildren (573 boys, 517 girls) from five to ten years wasudcarried out. These children were the total population (withinudthe age range) of two large Hobart Primary Schools.udThe frequencies obtained for the different formal, colourudand content categories were tabulated and discussed withudparticular reference to the findings and conclusions of otherudinvestigators. From these results a tentative developmentaludscale was drawn up in terms of each age level and for boysudand girls separately.udThe relation of maturity and intelligence to the variousudcategories was examined. It appeared that while developmentaludtrends were present, the correlation of intelligence withudthe categories was not high enough to explain deviation fromudthe general pattern. This increases the probability thatudemotional factors are important in cases which show deviationudfrom the developmental norm in their drawings. As no direct evidence of the operation of emotionaludfactors was available possible further studies and methodsudfor study were indicated.
