Enhanced genetic screening plan for the B.C. molecular genetics laboratory: A five year business plan

Technological advances in research science have made the identification and diagnosis of genetic dysfunctions possible, and economically viable. This paper explores the growth in the genetic testing industry, and examines the social and fiscal benefits of an expanded portfolio of genetic testing services for the British Columbia Molecular Genetics Laboratory. This study has effectively created a business case for expanding genetic testing for inherited disorders domestically by demonstrating that doing so will lead to a reduction in overall expenditures, an increase in revenues, and a decreased reliance on outsourcing. Moreover, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the genetic services industry, offering key findings and recommendations. The recommendations proposed in this paper are supported by in-depth financial projections, which demonstrate that implementation of this business plan will create an increased social benefit for British Columbians, as well as an economically sustainable future for the Molecular Genetics Laboratory of British Columbia.
