In this essay, which was firstly published in 2007 as the presidential address of the 68th session of the Indian History Congress, the author deals with the colonial trends in writing the Indian economic history of the colonial period. After describing very briefly the contours of some of the thinking on colonialism and its economic impact, the author focuses on a critique of how colonialism in its last phase has been perceived by historians with a colonial perspective,
