This research investigated the occurrence of ammonia fungi, and changes in soil conditions and the decay rates of bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoides) culm pieces in response to application of urea (800 g/m^2) on the floor of a bamboo (P. bambusoides) grove. Research was conducted in Chiba Prefecture, central Japan from 2 July 1993 to 20 January 1994. Four species of ammonia fungi, Amblyosporium botrytis, Coprinus cinereus, C.phlyctidosporus and Crucispora rhombisprma were collected on the urea-treated plot (urea plot). pH values of soils in the urea plot increased to about 9 by 7 days after the urea application, but then decreased to those at control level, 5.1-7.0 by 38 days after the application. Water contents of the soils in the L-H layer of the urea plot were somewhat higher than those at control level for 4 months after the urea application, but no difference in water contents of soils in the A horizon between urea and control plots (urea non-treated plot) was observed throughout the sampling period. No difference in decay rates of bamboo pieces embedded in the urea and control plots was observed during the sampling period. The data obtained indicates that the effect of urea application in a bamboo grove is less than that in other habitats.
