Locating the researcher within Language Management Theory : A case study of a research project on European integration

[Abstract] A common problem in language policy is that there is a gap between policy makers and language users. Policy makers are not always familiar with the real language situation. On the other hand, users are not always aware of the broader implications of their language life. Because of its comprehensive framework including micro and macro dimensions, research using Language Management Theory (LMT) seems to be especially suited to fill this gap. But so far, little attention has been paid to the LMT research process itself. As one step to clarify the role of research in filling the gap, this paper examines the place of the researcher within LMT. Based on a research project on European integration at the German-Polish border, concrete examples are presented regarding how the researcher tries to convey findings of research on micro situations to decision makers of various macro levels. This paper argues that the researcher is neither simply an additional actor at a certain level of the field investigated, nor completely outside the field. Rather, through his/her research activities linking different levels, the researcher becomes part of the situation s/he investigates. The main claim of this paper is that it is useful to include the researcher in the analysis of management processes.
