[ABSTRACT] For radiometric calibration of Terra ASTER TIR and Landsat-7 ETM+ thermal infrared band, vicarious calibration (VC) and cross calibration (CC) experiments were carried out in Lake Tahoe (Nevada), in Salton Sea (California), and Railroad Valley (Nevada) in 2000. For Salton Sea and Railroad Valley, ground temperature measurements were conducted in large playas during the overpasses of these satellites. For Lake Tahoe, airborne MASTER data were acquired. Atmospheric profile data were obtained with radisonde during experiments. These calibration results show that the radiant temperature of ASTER TIR, based on the on-board blackbody, is lower than those of VC/CC at high temperature. While the difference between ASTER/ETM+ and CC is 0.5〜1.4℃/3.9〜4.2℃ in Lake Tahoe, the difference between ASTER and VC is 0.5〜1.2℃ (except band 12) in Salton Sea, and 0.3〜1.0℃ in Railroad Valley. Cross calibration accuracy of ASTER TIR and ETM+ in Lake Tahoe is 0.5〜0.7℃, and 0.9℃, respectively.
