1) In order to obtain fundamental data and to evaluate the economic importance of the artificial pollination using pollen suspension of fruit trees, the laboratory and field studies were made to determine the viability and germination of pear, apple, persimmon and chestnut pollen in the suspension (in water and sugar solution) from 1953 to 1959. 2) Germination tests showed that loss of viability of fruit pollen in the water, except chestnut, occurred in a short time. It was suggested that safe time to pollinate fruit trees satisfactorily was only half an hour in persimmon, one hour in pear, one and half an hour in apple and three hours in chestnut. 3) When water solution was compared with sugar solution as a pollen suspension, the viability in the former was inferior to the latter. But more germination was found in the sugar suspension when not used. So even if a sugar suspension was used, it was safe to use it as early as possible after mixing. 4) In general, a concentration of sugar solution was considered to be suitable as that in the media of germination test. 5) Pollen activity in the suspension was markedly affected by solution temperature. Higher temperature, showing less favorable effects, was then the lower the germinability of polen as resultant.
