[Abstract] This paper examines 1) the purpose of joining the internship in Japanese enterprises by foreign students, 2) their evaluation on their achievement during the internship, and 3) the further goal that they assign for the future searching for a vocation after the internship. Data were collected mainly from the reports and the questionnaire written by undergraduate students in a private university in Japan. The results of the research suggest that the main purpose that the foreign students set for the internship is to assess themselves in workplace environments which consist of mainly Japanese so that they can decide on whether or not they should or could work in Japan. The work experience functions as a chance to provide the necessary information for them to have a positive and clear self-image of working for a Japanese company. Through the internship the students develop the occupational knowledge and self-concept as well as enhancing their self-esteem. It also helps for them to know the requirements on what they have to prepare for getting a job successfully in the future.
