At the outset, it is acknowledged that the state of development ofudthe radiological services in this country leaves much to be desired. In theudpast, a variety of factors have contributed to this developmental lag, udexperienced most acutely in the 1950's and 1960's. These included audsevere shortage of consultant manpower (also experienced in otherudcountries); economic factors; inadequate involvement of radiology andudradiologists in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education; andudthe rapidly changing and expanding nature of the discipline, all of whichudled to a depressed demand for services. In more recent times, theudposition has shown a considerable improvement particularly in relation, udto consultant manpower, increased investment in radiology equipment, udsupport staff and other facilities. The Comhairle considers that the timeudis now opportune to look at the future development of this specialty to udensure that the growth, which is currently in evidence, will be inudconformity with a rational plan designed to meet the needs andudcircumstances of the hospital services as well as to provide a professionallyudsatisfying career for those doctors who may choose radiology asudtheir specialty.
