Educate to care: A training needs analysis of Irish registered mental nurses in physical health and physical health skills.

Background to the Problem: Persons with serious mental illness (SMI) suffer significant excess mortality as compared to the general population (Ronis, 2008). Mental health service users, particularly those with SMI, have poorer physical health than that of the general population due to: Unequal access to health services; Poverty & social deprivation; Life-style factors; adverse effects of psychotropic medications (Nash, 2010). Mental Health Services have a key role in promoting the physical and mental well-being of their patients (Cormac et al, 2006).
