The unacceptable conditions which apply in Sligo General Hospitaludand which at the end of 1982 seemed well on the way to resolution, unfortunately are stilludwith us. The Board was faced early in 1983 with a Government decision notudto proceed with the project. However, following committments given by theudhospital management and staff on ftlvsnue consequences, and rapidudexamination of the project with a view to achieving a phased approach, theudplanning process has been resumed, with a timetable to complete contractuddocuments by the end of 1984. This project has bn for years, andudhas been our first hospital priority.udWithin limited resources, improvements have continued in theudpsychiatric services and In services for the aged, and are detailed in thisudreport. Being parochial, I must record particular pleasure at theudcommencement of work on the replacement of the Nursing Home inudBallymote, a unit which has long been condemned by the Fire Authorities.udThe development and expansion of the Board's Lifeskills programme inudthe second level schools Is welcome and timely, and has created widespreadudsatisfsctlon among school authorities, teachers, patients and the generaludpublic. The year also saw the opening of an aids display and generaludinformation service for the handicapped.
