In this paper we analyze the effects of theprobabilities of detection, of false alarm, and of framesurvival (in the presence of simultaneous transmissions) onMAC protocols using impulse radio-ultra wideband (IRUWB)energy collection non-coherent receivers. The MACprotocols considered are all IEEE 802.15.4 compatible,namely the IEEE 802.15.4a optional UWB CCA mode,the IEEE 802.15.4a ALOHA mode, and a protocol termedpreamble sense multiple access (PSMA). The impact onthe network throughput, energy consumption, and delayare derived analytically and verified by simulation. Theresults show that these effects have a considerable impacton the performance of IR-UWB MAC protocols and aclassical analysis does not properly evaluate the protocolsperformances. The results compare the performances ofthe MAC protocols as well as highlight a number ofissues regarding adapting narrowband protocols to UWBsystems. The probability of frame survival on simultaneoustransmissions is shown to have a significant impact ona MAC protocol performance. The comparison showssuperior performance of the PSMA protocol under
