1. The Golgi apparatus in the fibroblasts in vitro is represented by a clump of canalicules and filaments embedded in a ground substance. 2. Under the phase microscope, the Golgi region appears to be an area occupied by a number of vacuoles and delicate filamentous or lamellar structures intervening between them. The vacuoles are optical sections of the canalicules. 3. Both of the formed elements of the Golgi region are stained red with neutral red and are stained violet metachromatically with methylene blue, toluidine blue and trimethylthionin. Of the canalicules, only the wall is stained, but not the content. The finer elements, when stained, are evidently shown to be filaments. Some of the canalicules taper at one end to become filaments. 4. There are sometimes a small number of mitochondria stainable with Janus green in the midst of the Golgi region. 5. Both elements of the Golgi apparatus are blackened with osmic acid. They are closely packed together, but they do not constitute a real reticulum.
