The structure of tissue and the shape of fiber in the five species of useful bamboo were studied and the following results were obtained: 1) The vascular bundles are surrounded by parenchyma and their density varies considerably among species. And in the node, a part of the vascular bundle runs vertically against the axis of the bamboo culm. 2) The cross section of the individual fiber cell is almost round or polygonal and takes the peculiar concentrical layered structure consisting of 2-4 layers. The lumen is very narrow. There are many radial cracks projecting from the lumen to the side of the fiber cell. This is considered to be the pit which links the adjacent fiber cells. 3) Of the five species, the average lengths are 2.2mm (D, strictus), 1.9mm (M. bambusoides), 1.6mm (Madake) and 1.4mm (Mosochiku and Medake), respectively. Consequently the bamboo fibers are ranked between the coniferous tracheid and the deciduous fiber of the length. 4) Since the width of the fiber is very small (13μ-22μ), the length by width is comparatively large (ca. 100), and therefore the bamboo fiber takes a long and slender shape.
