A study of magnetorheological (MR) fluids energy absorption capability towardsdevelopment of composite retrofit technologies for aged helicopters is presented inthis paper. Design parameters that influence the performance of MR dampers wereidentified and evaluated based on the damping force as a measure of compatibilityto energy absorption. Tensile, compression and cyclic loading tests were alsoconducted experimentally to validate the numerical investigation. An extensiveparametric study conveyed that the piston head radius plays a major role inachieving higher damping force. The fundamental behaviours and results of thedamping force in the numerical studies were also in a good agreement with theexperimental results. The novel parametric numerical analysis framework validatedin this paper will allow for efficient design and optimisation of future dampers.
