This paper proposes a novel automated separationudmanagement concept in which onboard decisionudsupport is integrated within a centralisedudair traffic separation management system. Theudonboard decision support system involves a decentralisedudseparation manager that can overruleudair traffic management instructions under certainudcircumstances. This approach allows theudadvantages of both centralised and decentralisedudconcepts to be combined (and disadvantages ofudeach separation management approach to be mitigated).udSimulation studies are used to illustrateudthe potential benefits of the combined separationudmanagement concept.
