Station track allocation is the critical componentudin the overall railway timetabling. Because of itsudintrinsic complexity and lack of modeling on stationudtrack layouts and train movement within station,udanalytical approach to attain optimal solution is notudfeasible. This study investigates the possibilities ofudapplying a heuristic approach and identifies possibleuddifficulties in practice. It is the first and importantudstep to resolve one of the burning issues in theudmainline railway operation in China.
