A collaborative virtual sculpting system supports audteam of geographically separated designers/engineers connectedudby networks to participate in designing three-dimensional (3-D)udvirtual engineering tools or sculptures. It encourages internationaludcollaboration at a minimal cost. However, in order for the systemudto be useful, two factors need to be addressed: intuitiveness andudreal-time interaction. Although a lot of effort has been put intouddeveloping virtual sculpting environments, only limited work addressesudcollaborative virtual sculpting. This is because in orderudto support real-time collaborative virtual sculpting, many challengingudissues need to be addressed. In this paper, we propose a collaborativeudvirtual sculpting framework, called VSculpt. Throughudadapting some techniques we developed earlier and integratingudthem with some techniques developed here, the proposed frameworkudprovides a real-time intuitive environment for collaborativeuddesign. In particular, it addresses issues on efficient rendering andudtransmission of deformable objects, intuitive object deformationudusing the CyberGlove and concurrent object deformation by multipleudclients. We demonstrate and evaluate the performance of theudproposed framework through a number of experiments.
