When it comes to assessing the relations between the Christian kingdoms of the Peninsula and the neighbouring Andalusian territories, the vocabulary which each used to refer to the other takes on a political, and even ideological, dimension. In that sense, the discovery of Arabic denominations for the south of the Peninsula and its inhabitants, in Christian material dated from the middle of the twelfth century, might open up new perspectives for investigation. Indeed, the statement, so often made by historians, that the discourse of Christian authorities rejected the socio-political realities of Al Andalus should thereby be qualified."
