Catalogue of the wooden altars (tābot and manbara tābot) in the churches of Lālibalā. Landmarks for a history of objects and patterns - Among the liturgical objects manufactured and used by the Ethiopian Church, the wooden altars found at Lālibalā are particularly interesting because their study contributes to the knowledge of liturgy, history and art history. They witness to an evolution of the liturgy which is likely to have begun around the mid 12th century. The present catalogue establishes the corpus of the altars still preserved on site, examines their inscriptions and describes their forms as well as the carved patterns. A large number of texts engraved on these objects point to King Lālibālā as responsible for their existence. This makes of them exceptionally important documents since the Ethiopian texts contemporary with this period are extremely rare. By the same token, landmarks allowing to date forms and designs are also provided.
