Summary. - The article proposes the correction jievréopa/jiov (for jiévxe ôpa%uo:ç) in Polyaenus, Stratagemata, III, 10, 14, meaning a coin. The striking of Pentedrachms was very rare in Antiquity. In a Delphic list of accounts the term is applied to gold Attic weight staters struck by Philipp II and Alexander III. However the 10,9 g staters of Perdiccas III were all struck on a high-quality silver alloy. This denomination had been introduced by Archélaos, and it was continued by his successors, from Aeropos to Perdiccas III. The study of types and weights of the silver coins of these kings shows that they followed the system in use already by Perdiccas II, and that the only monetary innovation introduced by Archélaos was the stater of 10,9 g. Two other passages of Polyaenus (III 10, 1 and IV 10, 2) and another of Ps- Aristoteles, Œconomicus (II 24), are also discussed.
