Fairs and exhibitions in France and in Germany. — This paper presents a human geography appraisal of the system of fairs and exhibitions in France and in Germany. It shows that the present structure of the system differs widely between the two countries. Germany holds an actually dense network of important places. France is characterised by the very dominant position of Paris and by the great dispersal of the remai-ning structure. A multicriteria classification of fair towns for the two countries (table 3) reveals that Paris ranks first, but that, among the other french places, Lyons alone stands in the set of first ten ones, ranking 8 th. Moreover, German centres attract a larger participation of foreigners, both as exhibitors and as visitors, in concordance with the respective share of the two countries in international trade. With the prospect of european integration (1993), one can expect a development of the participation of non-european exhibitors, and structural evolutions due to present doublets and to production normalisation. The quality requirements in exhibition and information will grow. Private actors will play a larger role. In this context, both Germany and France seem to keep their dominant positions : Germany (being the «number one » among countries holding fairs) thanks to its high density of large fairs, all of them having a good access, France because it holds the «number one place » in Europe.
