Abstract. - Poplar forestry is studied as a symbol of the new forests. Functioning on the model of industrial agriculture, it offers undeniable successes and obvious failures. The reasons of these contradictions are investigated in an analysis of poplar forestry on different scales : world, national, départemental, local. The ecological data is better and better known, the economical conditions are more and more quantified, but the sociological context of poplar forestry remains generally less investigated.
