In 1944-1945 the italian communist party emerged as the major party of the left. Its growing membership required the promotion of new cadres. Training schools for party officials had the purpose of preparing party bureaucrats for political life, providing them with technical skills as well as ensuring the homogeneity and sense of belonging of party elites. The case of the PCI's national schools in the post-war period shows that this training involved a formal learning process and the trainees' acquisition of certain political habitus. The study of the school works, and the process of learning and character formation involved by this brief period of study in the Italian training schools, provides the bases for a sociology of party education. This study illustrates the creation and maintenance of a political identification and the reproduction of a model of political professionalisation among party officiais which is characteristic of communist parties.
