After depicting the socio-professionnal environment of their grand-parents and parents, — the trading manufacturera one — , the author studies through various administrative sources and a family correspondance the abortive attempt of three members of two families from Cholet : the Delhumeau and the Vinet. In the second part, the author tries to analyse why they failed and describes the reactions of the people involved and that oftheir relatives when facing such an economical downfall.
