On many coasts large amounts of sediments were drifted shoreward from the sea floor during the world-wide Early Holocène transgression. As still-stand approached around 5 or 6 000 years ago, extended beaches developed and eventually dune fields formed on coastal plains. When progradation ceased because the sediment supply from the offshore zone was depleted, erosion started and became prevalent except where large amounts of sediments were carried down to the coast by rivers, in particular in the deltaic areas.
