Abstract. - Mandya region, in the South of Karnataka state, is densely and anciently populated. This dry area, traditionnaly irrigated by tanks, is now basically irrigated by canals where water flows from the Kaveri river and its tributaries. This modern irrigation has led to economic development, social changes and regional disparities.
