Les hebdomadaires anglophones à Canton, 1827-1837 : quels enjeux ?

In the early nineteenth century as British presence was established in China, three weeklies developed in Canton, The Canton Register, The Chinese Courier and The Canton Press. Though they had to survive in a hostile environment, they were used as a medium for missionaries and merchants to interact, whilst China remained closed to foreigners. They gave access to information to a section of the Chinese elite at a time when no comparable Chinese newspapers existed. They were the starting point of journalism in China which enabled the birth of the modern Chinese press.
