Faust, le Faustbuch et le Faustus Pseudo-Clémentin, ou la genèse d'un mythe

The comparison of the oldest version of Faust's legend, the Faustbuch (1587), with several episodes of Simon Magus' legend showes that the writer of the Faustbuch knew the simonian tradition and that he used it in order to draw up the character of his own doctor Faust. But where did he gather this information from ? From the heresiological tradition (Justin, Irenaeus) ? Or from the Homilies of the Pseudo-Clement ? It is not impossible that the anonymous writer has already known the Homilies, then unpublished, either by the edition of their Epitome or by one of their manuscripts. But the oddest thing is that the historical doctor Faust may have used some elements of Faust's legend in order to built his own character...
