Quality of life in alpine towns- with examples from Innsbruck and Bregenz La qualité de vie dans les villes alpines : exemples d'Innsbruck et Bregenz Axel Borsdorf Abstract : Quality of life was a key expression in the 1970s. Since the Brundtland report in 1987, however, a new keyword, « sustainability », has dominated discussion. The paper argues that sustainable development is concerned with functional processes and evaluation. It is only once individual goals are clear that objectives can be defined. The quality of life criterion may therefore be used to complete the sustainability indicators. With this in mind, the paper looks at the quality of life in two alpine cities. First, we look at how quality of life can be measured. We then examine how the physical and human environments peculiar to the alpine regions influence the perception of the quality of life. Insights gained from this type of study may help in determining appropriate living conditions for alpine populations.
