Abstract. - The decline of dyking up in Northern Friesland is related to the european politics of set aside and to the lobbying of ecologists ; but new developments are still going on to complete the defensive system in existence. An opinion poll displays inhabitants, either farmers or not, more sensitive to the difficulties of farming and to protective measures against the sea than to ecological considerations.
