ALAIN GIAMI "THE AUTHORITARIAN PERSONALITY" REVISITED : PLURIDISCIPUNARITY AND PSYCHOANALYSIS "The Authoritarian Personality" has been largely misunderstood concerning both its specificity and global approach. The interest and the limits of the pluridisciplinary construction of the book have never been critically analyzed, nor has the specific purpose of psychoanalysis been evaluated, despite the various transpositions of the latter and its theorizing elsewhere. After first presenting the general structure of the book, the paper offers a critical analysis of the use of psychoanalysis, followed by a review of the most important critiques directed against the work. These critiques have missed the pluridisciplinary dimensions of the book and have defended reductive disciplinary approaches.
