SUMMARY. — Instead of looking for allies among Mediterranean colleagues, who were geographically, politically, and economically close to them, Spanish biochemists took Northern European science, then Anglo-American science, as models instead. They did so in order that their discipline, which they founded during Franco's dictatorship, would obtain international legitimization and scientific recognition. The field's development was marked by devotion to research, precarious means, and the support of the politico-scientific authority set up by Franco's regime.
