Mutations de l'espace urbain à Shanghai : une mégapole entre ville globale et culture locale ? (Urban space changes in Shanghai : a megapole between global city and local culture ?)
Abstract. - Chinese government plans to transform Shanghai into a so-called global city. In order to turn the city into a central market place of international capitalism, they lead an unprecedented urban metamorphosis that crumbles the traditional city patchwork, bringing about a stereotyped idea of modernity. However, some old space uses interweave with the new imposed style. It gives rise to a twofold city, where the geographical divide exemplifies the social divide of the insiders from the outsiders. It suggests a parallel development of social and spatial structures which becomes the very challenge of urbanism : global culture and local social practices have to mingle together.
