Jean Pascal Le Goff : the flowers of akiaki : an episode in Bougainville's voyage. Before arriving in Tahiti, Bougainville and his companions discovered an apparently deserted island. They imagined a South Sea paradise, but were disappointed and astonished at the arrival of the Polynesian inhabitants ; this undermined their conception of their own origins. Instead of desiring this Eden they now brutally rejected it when they perceived its unacceptably primitive nature. But their interrogation concerning the Tahitian's nature and their troubling similarity, led them to invent another imaginary paradise, which succeeded in recreating the distance between them.
