The relationships between industrial cities and industrial companies have strongly changed under major economic shifts in the French society. Transfers of production have largely disrupted the French industrial landscape. The textile-clothing industry is an emblematic example of this disruption with slump in jobs and relocation of plants abroad and as such, through a profound analysis it can help to understand this transformation. Highly challenged by basic goods produced in low-cost countries, the French textile industry seeks a solution through an increase in research, development and efforts on quality. It seems that the solution found would come from niche markets that are less accessible and with higher added values. The rise of emerging markets is an opportunity for these niche players. Apparently, a perennial existence is at stake rather cost reduction at any price.
