One of the main interests of the pottery collected during the récent excavations of the Middle Helladic settlement of Aspis at Argos (1974-1990) is due to the fact it came from stratified habitation deposits covering nearly ail the period from ΜΗ Ι to ΜΗ ΙΙΙΒ. Among this material the painted pottery forms a particularly interesting group, not only because it represents over a third ofthe whole, but because it lends itself by its physical character (technology, shapes, decoration) to a study of the variability of the pottery. It is through the latter that one can best attempt an approach to the relations, social conceptions and more generally socio-economic organisation, fields largely unexplored for this period. Middle Helladic painted pottery is divided into two broad categories : the Mattpainted ware, one of the most characteristic of the period, and the Lustrous Decorated ware, much rarer and less widespread. The first part of this study, devoted to the Mattpainted ware, presents a review of its different technological categories and principal types, which makes it possible to identify several original features of the Argive production, but also to appreciate the place in it occupied by the series imported from other production centres in the Aegean basin.
