Un ensemble de céramiques daté du début de la période augustéenne sur le site du Mas de Vignoles à Nîmes (Gard)

An excavation in 1987 of the site at Mas de Vignoles, which lies just a few kilometres south of the ancient town of Nîmes, revealed the presence of two parallel ditch channels situated amid a large expanse of parcelled land. The wares that were discovered in one of the channels date from between 20 BC and 10 BC. The presence of the objects originates from the rapid filling in of the channel and could be related to neighbouring habitations. The ceramic wares discovered reveal the persistence of traditional cooking habits, but do not exclude the consumption of new, imported food ingredients. The dishes found at the site also add new information, both about the development of local and regional communal potteries, and the special importance given to certain forms of recipients, such as mortars and wide-mouthed jugs. Furthermore, the information collected also raises questions about the halting of importations of Dressel 1 Italic amphora, at a time when the sale of wine to Nîmes and its immediate area was based notably upon the development of wine-making in the region, along with the contribution of other provinces of the Empire.
