La briquetterie Oupray à Epouville (Pays de Caux, Seine-Maritime) : mélange d'industries du Paléolithique moyen récent et du Paléolithique supérieur ancien / The Dupray brickfield at Epouville (Pays de Caux, Seine-Maritime): mixture of late Middle Palaeolithic and early Upper Palaeolithic industries

The site of the Dupray brickfield, in Epouville (Seine-Maritime), was excavated in the 1970's and 1980's. The archaeological level of the excavations from 1975 to 1976, systematically associated with a thin layer of grave ! loess alluvium dated to the Full Glacial, was then considered as being in situ and interpreted as a Mousterian of Acheulean tradition. Stratigraphic uncertainties about these levels have been often underlined. Sedimentary hiatuses are frequent numerous, and new studies on this assemblage have shown that archaeological layers are mixed. In 1992, G. Drwila had presupposed a mixture of a Mousterian assemblage and an Aurignacian one. Apart from this interpretation, no industry has been as yet associated with the Aurignacian in Upper Nonvandy, thus it was interesting to test this interpretation's validity. The newly-conducted analysis confirms the mixing ofthe industries : - the most recent one, included in the gritty alluvium cornes from the early Upper Palaeolithic, but it is impossible to be more spécific, - the oldest one, derived from the brown layered loess, or even subjacent gravels, is late Middle Palaeolithic.
