The disappearance of the Minoan civilization in Crete and the islands in the Aegean Sea has been interpreted as the result of the outburst of the Santorini volcano (Thera). However, horizons at the base of the new port of Athinios, on the southwestern coast of Thera, have revealed remains which testify to the destruction of towns by earthquakes and the later upthrust of volcanic activity. A major break of activity of several centuries has been followed by a collapse and a period of marine erosion, before the final pumiceous paroxysm, the whole process taking place over more than eight centuries. Several phases are distinguishable over the whole of the archipelago and the origin of the caldera is diputed.
