Problems arising from the formalisation and the automation of methods of textual analysis. Comments on research on a corpus of manuscripts describing the founding of the city of Florence. This research is not justified either by its aim or by the project of knowledge it covers. It is first a search for strictness and methodological precision, based on the careful formalisation of a problem. The object is a group of manuscripts, more exactly of parts of manuscripts, describing a Florentine tradition. The project is the examination of the mechanics of the transmission of this information. In a language compatible with the methods of textual analysis, the author gives a definition of the conditions for the production of a rigorous disciplinary speech. The article is made up of two parts : (1) the comparative analysis of the contents of the corpus ; (2) the elaboration and criticism of a mathematical method of reconstruction of the process of transmission of the text. Proceeding from the questions raised by this research, the author particularly stresses the problems created by the utilisation of mathematical analysis and computors, in prospect of a rigorous scientifical application.
