The communities of priests count among those church institutions which have not much attracted the interest of scholars. However, in the past two decades, research on them has increased considerably. N. Lemaitre and S. Brunet have shown how these associations formed a vital element of agrarian communities by playing the role of credit organisations. But numerous questions concerning them remain, notably about their geographical distribution, or whether these priests are evidence of resistance to the tridentine clerical model.
