Well known for many years for its Bronze Age hoard, its " oppidum ", its " tumulus " and its Gallic coins, the plateau of Les Châtelliers also incorporates a site of the Chassey Culture, which, forty years after its discovery, remains the most important evidence for this culture in the Loire region. Its general characteristics relate it to the Early Chassey Culture of the Paris Bassin. At the same time, certain features of its lithic industry pose problems which are not easily resolved in the present state of knowledge of the regional context. The site has also yielded a female idol without parallel among the twenty or so examples currently known from France.
