La place de l'automobile dans l'évolution de la mobilité urbaine à Pékin (The automobile in the evolution of urban mobility in Beijing)

Abstract. - The fast motorization process that Beijing city has been experiencing since the early 90' s is related to new urban development dynamics in post-Mao China. The increase in automobile use reveals a suburbanization phenomenon, stronger separation between place of work and place of residence, and a more specialized land use pattern. An unequal access to motorized vehicles highlights rising social inequalities in contemporary Beijing. While Beijing municipality overall strategy for transportation favours motorized traffic through road system improvement, new policies tend to limit the negative effects of growing automobile use.
