Gilles Lazuech, Recruiting and being recruitable : The transition to work of young graduates from engineering and commercial colleges. The transition to work of young graduates from engineering and commercial colleges The way in which some young graduates from engineering and commercial colleges prepare to enter working life can be compared with company recruitment practices. « Generalists » (human resource managers, heads of firms, managing directors, etc.) play a decisive role in the recruitment process, since they influence both the final choice of candidates and the extent to which a candidate's personality is taken to be an important ultimate criterion. The recruitability of young diploma-holders is the result of a long curriculum- constructing process, involving the variably strong social ability to foresee the future and present themselves to prospective employers in a favourable light. Those who belong to a similar social level to that of their recruiters will be the best equipped to stress the value of the various activities in which they have engaged during their training course (active participation in student associations, obtaining work experience involving responsibilities with a large firm or in another country, choosing management options during the final year, etc.). This study was based on the results of a series of surveys involving both questionnaires and extensive interviews.
