Les mithraea de Septeuil et de Bordeaux

The Septeuil (Yvelines- 1985) and Bordeaux (Gironde- 1986) mitbraea are the most recent mithraea sanctuary discovered in Transalpine Gaul. They are both situated away from an economic centre : likely vicus in Septeuil and periphery of an urbanized zone in Burdigala. They present the general characteristics common to this type of sanctuary : half excavated in Septeuil, totally dug in Bordeaux with a tripartite division of space. They are at first differenciated by their size, Septeuil featuring a smaller spelaeum than Bordeaux. They also diverge in the choice of the construction materials. In Septeuil, the construction policy aims at reusing material and at the rough arrangement of a cult room, whereas in Bordeaux the construction is well finished. The Septeuil mithraeum is a belated sanctuary : second half of the IVth century and of short duration whereas the Bordeaux one first appears at the beginning of the IIIrd century and lasts until the second half of the IVth century.
