Un nouveau témoin de la tradition illustrée des Actes des Apôtres : les fresques romanes découvertes à l'abbaye de Nonantola

This study deals with frescoes discovered in February 1983 at Nonantola Abbey in a place which was probably used as the refectory. First, it aims at identifying a very much damaged scene where Paul Lowered Over the Walls according to Acts IX, 24-25, can however be recognized. This scene is followed by that of Paul' First Arrival in Jerusalem according to Acts IX, 26-27, whose first registered example is now provided by Nonantola. Then it shows the links to be established between these frescoes remaining from a cycle illustrating the Acts of the Apostles and other documents founded on the illustration of the same texte and registered in North Italy at the same time (Vercelli Rotulus, "veronese" manuscripts Vat. lat. 39, Vat. Chigi A. IV. 74, Codex Giustiniani ). Besides, the analogies noticed between these scenes and the Capella Palatina mosaics in Palermo and together with frescoes of San Paolo f.l.m. in Rome urge us to suppose a common prototype. At last, the connections between these scenes and the witnesses of iconographie tradition are brought to light, specially the San Paolo Bible and the byzantine manuscripts. These paintings, whose style is byzantinizing, could be dated in the second half of the XII century.
