Decolonizing Situations: The Rise, Fall... and Rise of Colonial Studies, 1951-2001 Frederick Cooper Paradoxically, when colonial issues were acute in the decade following Balandier's brilliantly incisive article of 1951 on the "colonial situation", scholars were less interested in studying colonialism than in examining the struggle against it and the possibilities that ending it would open up: modernization, urbanization, industrialization. Interest in exploring colonialism was renewed in the 1980s when colonialism was no longer on the political agenda. The paper explores a fifty year period in which the colonial situation faded into and out of view (looking at alternative perspectives on colonized and formerly colonized societies) and it asks about the significance of the renewed interest in colonialism in an age when colonial rule is no longer a live political issue.
